We all know that exercise is a good thing but knowing it and doing it are two different things. My doctor always asks me if I am exercising. I mention that I like walking and I'm always tempted to say that I preach! It is probably one of my main work outs! Sadly, with a new studio, I now sit on a stool to preach, so there is less jumping! Physical exercise has always been important but especially at a time when there is less opportunity and we are at home more.
The Bible says, "Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." We don't often think about spiritual training for many of the same reasons that we do not exercise physically. We think we are okay as we are, we hope to do it some day and we think it won't be of much benefit. Sometimes we try it for a while but we have little desire and discipline.
Walking is such a great exercise physically but we also need to make sure that we walk with God everyday. This will mean seeking Him first in prayer and in His Word. Making sure we have times of solitude. Listening to God and maybe keeping a journal. Taking notes when God's word is preached. Using our gifts to serve others. Connecting with others for fellowship and discipleship. Living a life of daily confession, repentance and faith. Walking together with others.
Take time to ask God which spiritual disciplines He is asking you to activate in your life and, share what they are with someone else and do it! Our greatest motivation is that God calls us to walk with Him and to be changed into His likeness. We never exercise alone but we always exercise by faith. Keep fit in 2021!
