Unlikely Disciple

  Unlikely Disciple - Summary

Series Summary: Peter is arguably the most well know of Jesus’ 12 disciples. He was a zealous and impetuous fisherman but he was also a risk-taker and a leader. He asked the questions most only think about and he jumped into action without a lot of thought. There is a part of Peter’s character in most of us. In his failures, we see our own and in his transformation, we see what Jesus can do with an unlikely disciple. God sees the end result before we do!

  New Peter

Core Truth: Every human heart longs for a new start. We can’t undo the things we have said and done but God can restore and reinstate us. To be forgiven is amazing. To be commissioned to serve the Creator of the universe is astonishing.

  The Same Jesus

Core Truth: The Jesus who showed up on the beach to make breakfast for His wayward disciples was the same Jesus who had walked with them for 3 years. Whatever they thought Jesus was going to say and do, they were to discover that they were still deeply loved. This same Jesus meet us when we least expect Him to.

Easter Sunday - When God Speaks Your Name

Core Truth: It is a horrible feeling when you know you have let someone down. Peter had failed Jesus and He knew it. Now that Jesus was gone all hope of restoration had evaporated. Until he heard his name. Could it be true?

Scripture: Mark 16:1-7, John 20:1-10

Good Friday - Run To The Cross

Core Truth: When we come to face to face with our failures it is overwhelming. As Jesus prepared to go to the cross, Peter came face to face with his cascading failures. Where you run to when your sin is revealed is critical. God invites us to run to the cross.

Scripture: Matthew 26:36-46

  Palm Sunday - Blind Spots

Core Truth: Palm Sunday - We all live with blind spots. Peter’s blind spot was in believing that his significance lay in a position of greatness. He wanted to be recognized as the go-to disciple. Satan wanted to use his blind spot to bring him down. Jesus prayed that his faith would overcome.

Scripture: Luke 22:24-34

  Fear of Missing Out

Core Truth: It is easy to be jealous when we see others enjoying a standard of life that we could only dream about. We have an innate fear of missing out. Peter couldn’t believe that a rich young ruler walked away from Jesus to enjoy his wealth while he stayed trying to get by every day. Jesus’ answer is one that we all need to hear.

Scripture: John 13:1-17

  Unlimited Forgiveness

Core Truth: Peter believed that forgiveness was limited to a number before the act of grace was no longer available. Like us, he had not counted his own sins or fully see the mercy which had been shown to him. Unlimited forgiveness doesn’t seem fair until we begin to see the heart of Jesus to us.

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-35

  Freedom to Submit

Core Truth: Like us Peter did not find it easy to submit to authority. His default was to fight for his rights and have others submit to him. Jesus teaches Peter and us a lesson about the miracle of using our freedom to submit to those in authority and to go beyond what the law requires. It is the way of Jesus.

Scripture: Matthew 17:24-27

  Taste of Heaven

Core Truth: Do you ever wonder what heaven will be like? Peter was chosen along with James and John to trek up a mountain with Jesus. What they would witness would be a taste of heaven with Jesus and some surprising guests. Heaven came down and glory filled their souls.

Scripture: Matthew 17:1-13

  Why The Cross?

Core Truth: Why was it necessary for Jesus to die on a cross to save us? Even Peter, Jesus’ disciple, initially thought there was another way. The sacrifice that Jesus made has the power to make us one with God.

Scripture: 1 John 4:7-10, 14-15

  Blocking Jesus

Core Truth: Life can feel like a rollercoaster at times. One day you feel you are on top of everything and the next day you feel like you have just blown everything. Like us, Peter had many of those moments. He thought he was helping Jesus when in fact he was hindering Him. He wanted a crown without a cross.

Scripture: Matthew 16:21-26

  A Fragile Stone

Core Truth: Peter makes a bold declaration of who He believes Jesus is. Jesus makes an even bolder declaration that Peter will be one of the foundational stones in His church. Peter did not immediately understand it but one day he would. Christ is the solid rock and Peter is a fragile but chosen stone, along with multitudes who would follow.

Scripture: Matthew 16:13-20, 1 Peter 2:4-10

Speaker: Sam Devine - Lead Pastor

  Walking on Water

Core Truth: It is incredible to consider that Jesus walked on water. It is perhaps, even more incredulous that Peter thought he could do the same! While the others sat in the boat, Peter’s faith was being stretched as he made an attempt to fully trust in Jesus. God calls us to trust in Him in ‘out of the boat’ circumstances.

Scripture: Matthew 14:22-33

  Miracle Worker

Core Truth: Peter witnesses the miraculous power of Jesus up close and personal as his mother-in-law is healed. He would also see that Jesus was not after celebrity status; His mission was to bring the good news of the Kingdom of God.

Scripture: Luke 4:38-44

Speaker: Sam Devine - Lead Pastor

  The Call

Core Truth: To follow Jesus means to respond to His call to believe and then to act on what we believe about Him. Like Peter, we place limits on what we believe God can do but He graciously shows us that nothing is impossible with Him. We are called to make disciples.

Scripture: Luke 5:1-11

Speaker: Sam Devine - Lead Pastor

  God Sees You

Core Truth: When Jesus looks at us He sees who we are and what we can become in Him. Peter was not the most likely choice to become a disciple of Jesus and a leader of the Church. God not only sees our potential; He sees the person He has made.

Scripture: John 1:35-42

Speaker: Sam Devine - Lead Pastor
