Our Story
Jacob Albright (1759-1808) who our church is named after, was deeply moved by the Wesleyan Revival. He shared the gospel among the German immigrants in North America by organizing groups to meet for evenings of prayer and encouragement. The meetings grew rapidly and before long they formed the Evangelical Association, in 1816.
The first missionary was sent to Western Canada in 1899. On November 22, 1900, Ebenezer Evangelical Church, which later became Albright Memorial, started with 14 charter members. The church was located in different places in the early years but in 1929 property was purchased at the corner of Church Ave. and McKenzie St., where a church was built in 1930. At this time the name changed to Albright Memorial Evangelical Church. Because of the Depression they met in the church basement for five years until they could complete the main floor sanctuary. This was Albright's home for sixty years. In the early 1980's there was a surge in growth and the realization that the church building was not conducive to further growth. The building was sold in 1990 and the church met for three years at Chief Peguis Jr. High School until a property was found and new facilities were completed.
After several years of planning, sacrificing and hard work a new building was constructed on a 5 acre lot at 3400 DeVries Ave. At this time the name was changed to Albright Evangelical Church (and later shortened to Albright Church). Our first worship service was held in our present facility on December 19, 1993.
As the church stepped out in faith God has continued being faithful, growing our congregation. In 1999 a 1,000 sq ft annex was constructed for education space, and further expansion is being considered as space is still at a premium.
In 2006, another faith step was taken as Albright extended its ministry through the planting of a daughter church. New beginnings were celebrated in September 2006 with the opening of River’s Edge Church, meeting at rented facilities in the city of Selkirk, MB. Once again, God has demonstrated His faithfulness in growing that ministry!
God has blessed us with a wonderful church home that is being used every day for spiritual, educational, recreational and community needs, as we seek to know Christ intimately, to live for Him passionately, and to make Him known publicly.
