Our 10 Greatest Struggles

  Summary

Life is a struggle and an adventure. Like climbing a rock face, it is both a struggle and magnificent experience.  God knows your greatest life struggles and in the Ten Commandments He gives us practical answers that show how to move forward in the face of our greatest struggles.

  Struggling with Desires

Big Idea: Christianity is not simply a program for promoting good behavior. In the final commandment we discover that what matters most is not just doing the right thing, but getting rid of the disease that makes the things we’ve talked about in this series such a struggle.

Scripture: Exodus 20:17; Deut 5:21

Speaker: Alan Shantz, Lead Pastor

This message is a first person biographical presentation as the Apostle Paul.  I’d like to give credit to Dr. Mark Mitchell for the idea and some content.

Date: June 14, 2015

  Struggling with Truth

Big Idea: Find out why truth telling is so difficult and how taking the 9th commandment to heart will help you avoid the devastation of being less than truthful while discovering the freedom available to those who follow this commandment.

Scripture: Exodus 20:16; Deut 5:20

Speaker: Alan Shantz, Lead Pastor

Date: June 7, 2015

  Struggling with Wanting More

Big Idea: The eight commandment, “You Shall not steal”, confronts a core struggle we all face.  When we understand the meaning of this commandment we position ourselves to overcome the struggle it identifies.  Both the meaning and the answer to this commandment might surprise you.

Scripture: Exodus 20:15; Deut 5:19; Malachi 3:8-9

  Struggling with Purity

Big Idea: When you are climbing and you feel like you’re going to fall, you don’t need someone shouting at you; you need someone to show you where to put your foot so you can keep moving forward. Discover how you can learn to walk in sexual purity.

Scripture: Exodus 20:14; ; Deut 5:18

Speaker: Sam Devine -  Associate Pastor, People Development

Date: May 24, 2015

  Struggling to Love

Big Idea: If you go through your whole life and never commit a murder, does that mean you’ve kept God’s sixth commandment?  Jesus made it very clear that the meaning and implications of this commandment are far more reaching than the taking a life.

Scripture: Exodus 20:13; Deut 5:17

Speaker: Alan Shantz, Lead Pastor

Date: May 17, 2015

  Struggling with Authority

Big Idea: The first authority figures in our life are our imperfect parents.  Learning the significance of the fifth commandment can go a long way towards learning how to deal with the struggles that arise with the difficult people we face throughout our life.

Scripture: Exodus 20:12; Deut 5:16

Speaker: Sam Devine  - Associate Pastor, People Development

Date: May10, 2015

  Struggling with Time

Big Idea: Is “time” one of the biggest struggles of your life? How do you decide your priorities? What can you leave undone? How do you balance all the responsibilities of life? Find out what God says in the 4th commandment about handling our struggles with time.

Scripture: Exodus 20:8-11; Deut 5:12-15

Speaker: Alan Shantz, Lead Pastor

Date: May 3

  Struggling with Religion

Big Idea: The third commandment says, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” Is this just about swearing?  If so, or if not, why would God include in the Ten Commandments how we use His name?  And what impact does it have our life’s struggles today?

Scripture: Exodus 20:7; Deut 5:11

Speaker: Alan Shantz - Lead Pastor

Date: April 26, 2015

  Struggling with Worship

Big Idea: Perhaps you say to yourself, “The second commandment is a breeze since I don’t own idols.” This week we’ll discover there are many ways in which idolatry disguises itself in our lives today and how they end up causing us to struggle.

Scripture: Exodus 20:4-6; Deut 5:8-10

Speaker: Alan Shantz - Lead Pastor

Date: April 19, 2015

  Struggling With God

Big Idea: In the first commandment, God says, "You shall have no other gods before me." Why? Why should you let God be God in your life? Why should you obey His commandments at all?

Scripture: Exodus 20:1-3; Deut 5:6-7

Speaker: Alan Shantz - Lead Pastor

Date: April 12, 2015
